A Personal Commitment That Became a Lasting Responsibility

What Began With One Decision Became a Promise

When Dr. Dog began, I never imagined it simply as a place where dogs could stay. I wanted it to be a place where a dog who had already known abandonment, fear, illness, or neglect could finally feel that someone was not going to leave.

Over time, that responsibility became deeply personal.

I know each of our dogs by name, and their trust means everything to me. I have taken their well-being as a personal responsibility: to protect them, care for them, and make sure they never feel abandoned again.

Some of them may one day find a family of their own. Others may spend the rest of their lives with us. To me, that does not make their lives any less valuable.

Dr. Dog is my commitment to them: that as long as they are under our care, they will have food, medical attention, protection, dignity, and a place where they belong.

This work is not always easy, but every time I look at them, I am reminded why we continue.

They depend on us. And we intend to be here for them.

Our Story

Dr. Dog began in Paraguay in 2020 with a small dream: to create a safe home for dogs rescued from the streets — a place where they could finally leave fear, hunger, and abandonment behind and begin again.

At first, it was simply a hope and a commitment. Then, little by little, that dream began to take shape.

Over the years, walls went up, spaces were created, and the shelter grew. But the most important part of the story was never the building itself. It was the lives that began to change within it.

Dogs arrived carrying different stories. Some recovered, learned to trust again, and eventually found families of their own. Others stayed with us and made Dr. Dog their permanent home. And some are no longer physically beside us, but remain forever part of our story and our memories. Each of them mattered. Each of them was cared for, protected, and given the opportunity to live with dignity.

The photographs that accompany this story show that journey — from the first steps of the project to the shelter Dr. Dog has become today. They are more than images of construction and growth. They are reminders of every stage, every challenge, and every life that gave meaning to the work.

What started as a small dream has grown into a model no-kill shelter in Paraguay, built on compassion, responsibility, and the belief that every rescued dog deserves safety and a future. Today, Dr. Dog also has a nonprofit presence in the United States, reinforcing our commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship.

And our story is still being written.

Everything Dr. Dog has achieved so far has been made possible by the commitment of our founder, the dedication of the people who care for our dogs every day, and the support of those who have believed in our shelter and in the vision that continues to guide our work.

Our hope is to continue growing, strengthening our programs, and creating new opportunities to help more abandoned dogs. With continued support, we can keep bringing care where there was neglect, safety where there was fear, and hope where it is needed most.

Because every new chapter begins the same way: with one more life given a chance.
